Garden cress: sowing, care and harvest


Garden cress is known for its fast growth and peppery taste. It is an annual plant and can be consumed in any season. Moreover, garden cress can also be eaten in the form of sprouted seeds or young sprouts. It is very easy to grow a perfect plant in an aromatic vegetable garden. Here are some tips on growing garden cress.

Where and when does garden cress grow?

Garden cress can be grown indoors and outdoors.

Indoors, the seeds are sown year-round in pots or planters. The sowing in the open air takes place between March and September. The soil should be drained, fresh and fairly rich.

How do you plant watercress?

Garden cress is sown either in a line or on the fly in pots or in the ground.

After setting the seeds, cover them with a thin layer of soil. Water the soil and keep it moist until emergence. When the first seedlings appear, thin out, keeping the most powerful plants, leaving the plant every 10 cm.

For year-round garden cress, space your buttons every 3 to 4 weeks during March through September. Be warned, this is a frost-resistant plant, so consider growing it indoors the rest of the year.

How do you take care of watercress?

This edible plant requires very little care. All you have to do is water it regularly and keep the soil slightly moist, without overdoing it for the risk of flooding the plants. Also remember to hoe and remove weeds that may be infesting your crops.

Watercress attracts flea beetles, but is not subject to garden diseases.


Garden cress leaves are harvested throughout the year. Harvesting is generally done one month after sowing and done as needed. Just cut off the large leaves at the base of the rose.
